Robert E. Lee was offered to be the commanding officer of the
Union Army when the Civil War broke out. However, he declined the offer because he believed he could never put his sword
up against his family in Virginia. If Lee took this job, many people thought he would of been President after the war.
However Lee declined the offer and resigned his position as colonel of the U.S. He took control of the Army of Northern
Virginia, and was defeating the Union Army for two years at Fredricksburg and Chanslorsville. In March of 1863, Lee
began planing the battle of Gettysburg. What was suppost to be a groundbreaking victory turned into a complete disaster
for Robert E. Lee. He tried numerous times but for three days he was unsuccessful in knocking the North off the high ground.
Even after his defeat at Gettysburg, Lee still remained a hero in the south. When he died in 1870, he died perhaps the
most beloved general in American History. After the loss at Gettysburg, Lee offerd to resign his post as commanding
general of the Confederate Army, but the Confederate Government would not allow this.
