James Johston Pettigrew was born in  1828 and died in 1863.  H e served in Gettysburg as a Brigadier General which would be the highest rank he reached in the military.

James Johnston Pettigrew was a very successful educator and philosopher.  Many people believed he was incapable of military leadership.  This is why he does not get the respect he deserves.  A.P. Hill did not trust him.  However, during Pickett's Charge, he led a North Carolina Brigade, and remained on the field despite a wound.  His men breached the stonewall at Gettysburg, and some even argue that the famous Pickett's Charge could have been called Pettigrew's charge.
